In 1997, the Mint created a silver $1 coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's ground-breaking integration of baseball.

Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia on January 31, 1919. Despite hardships, Jackie became the first African-American to play on a Major League baseball team when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in April 1947 and became Rookie of the Year. In 1949, Jackie was named Major League baseball's Most Valuable Player, along with winning the batting title. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. He later died of a heart attack on October 24, 1972 at the relatively young age of 53.

One of Robinson's most memorable quotes was, "a life is not important except in the impact it has on others' lives."
