Túpac Amaru II (1738 - 1781) aka José Gabriel Condorcanqui was the leader of an indigenous revolt against the Spaniards of colonial Peru. Later, despite his defeat, he became a legendary figure in the struggle for Peru's independence, for the rights of indigenous peoples, and for a host of other causes.
