Set in 17th century Brazil, Almeyda grows up on Portuguese plantations and hears rumors of Palmares, a hidden settlement where fugitive slaves live free. She eventually escapes and marries a charismatic Muslim named Martim Anninho, but their community is destroyed by war. Almeyda sets out on a dangerous journey to find Anninho and a "New Palmares".
