This study of British Guiana presents an objective account of the development of a complex multi-racial society, including Negro / African influences. It is the only British colony on the mainland of South America, and of its present-day (1962) social, economic, and political structure. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the plantation as a primary determinant of social relations, and the controversial questions of constitutional progress and self-government.
